NASA has published a photo of the dark side of Venus – it was captured using the Parker Solar Probe space probe. Initially, the probe was launched to study the outer “surface” of the Sun, but during the flight it also flew past Venus several times, which made it possible to take a picture of its night side.
In the image, Venus is surrounded by stars, and the dark spot in its central part is Aphrodite’s Land, the largest “mountain region” on the planet.
Also, the probe’s camera discovered that a bright “rim” passes along the edge of the planet, which may be the night glow of the atmosphere, emitted by oxygen atoms when combined with nitrogen atoms.
