NASA helicopter ready for 18th flight – Communication with Perseverance restored

Restored by the US Space Agency (NASA) radio communication in Mars between the small robotic helicopter Ingenuity -the first to fly to another world- and the rover Perseverance. So the drone is getting ready to do it His 18th flight after the forced temporary immobilization of the until the technical problem is solved.

In particular, the contact between the helicopter and the rover (and consequently with NASA on Earth) was lost on December 5 after the 17th flight, as hills between Ingenuity landing site and Perseverance blockade radio signal.

The total flight time of the helicopter to the neighboring planet has exceeded 30 minutes, according to NASA. Ingenuity was designed to fly only for a few minutes over a period of 30 days, just as a confirmation that its technology “works”, but so far it has done better than expected, making many short flights during the approximately eight months it is on Mars, as broadcast by APE-MPE.

Greek-American engineer plays a key role in the development, management and navigation of the helicopter Teddy (Theodoros) Tzanetos, a graduate of MIT and currently a member of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). As he said, according to the American agency UPI, “few believed that he would fly once, even fewer that he would reach the five flights. And no one thought he would get to that point».

Flight 18 is expected to take place in one distance of about 250 meters and take just over two minutes. Ingenuity and Perseverance are preparing to move to another direction on Mars.
