NASA will remove Artemis 1 from launch pad due to Hurricane Ian

NASA will withdraw its Artemis rocket from the launch pad because of Hurricane Ian, the space agency announced on Monday (26).

“Managers met on Monday morning and made the decision based on the latest weather forecasts associated with Hurricane Ian, after additional data collected overnight showed no improvement in expected conditions for the Kennedy Space Center area,” it said. to NASA in a statement.

Once launched, the unmanned Artemis 1 mission will travel around the Moon.

While there is no human crew aboard the mission, it is the first step of the Artemis program, which aims to get humans to the Moon and eventually land them on Mars.

Hurricane Ian

According to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC), Hurricane Ian now has winds of 120 km/h with even higher gusts. Ian is located about 145 kilometers south-southwest of Grand Cayman and about 500 kilometers southeast of the western tip of Cuba.

A hurricane watch was issued along the west coast of Florida, north of Englewood to the Anclote River, including Tampa Bay.

While its exact trajectory remains unclear, Ian strengthened Sunday night as it churned across the Caribbean, threatening to hit Florida like a hurricane with high winds and dangerous storms.

While Ian is going strong, there is still “greater than normal” uncertainty about his trajectory and intensity, according to the NHC.
