National Cancer Fight Day: learn 10 tips to prevent the disease

Each year from 2023 to 2025, Brazil should register 704,000 new cases of cancer, according to estimates by the National Cancer Institute (Inca). The South and Southeast regions account for around 70% of the incidence, according to a report by the Inca released this week.

The publication is the main planning and management tool in the oncology area in Brazil, providing fundamental information for the definition of public policies, according to Inca. Altogether, occurrences were estimated for 21 types of cancer most incident in the country.

The most frequent malignant tumor in Brazil is that of non-melanoma skin (31.3% of all cases), followed by female breast (10.5%), prostate (10.2%), colon and rectum (6. 5%), lung (4.6%) and stomach (3.1%).

This Sunday (27), the National Cancer Fight Day promotes awareness about disease prevention. At least 30% of all cases are preventable with lifestyle changes.

Prioritizing the consumption of natural foods, maintaining the ideal weight according to age and height and including at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week are some of the strategies to prevent cancer. See other Inca recommendations below.

1 – Don’t smoke

Avoiding smoking is one of the most important attitudes for cancer prevention, according to Inca. In addition to lung cancer, smoking can favor the development of tumors in the oral cavity, larynx, pharynx, esophagus and bladder.

Chemical substances released into the environment can be inhaled by smokers and non-smokers, in so-called secondhand smoke.

2 – Have an adequate and healthy diet

Healthy eating is indicated as part of a comprehensive health strategy. In addition to preventing cancer, diets based on foods rich in nutrients strengthen the immune system against different types of infections.

The Ministry of Health recommends a diet focused on natural or minimally processed foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans and other legumes. In addition, ultra-processed foods and drinks should be avoided.

Ultra-processed products are typically industrial formulations produced from the modification of original foods and the combination of different ingredients that have unfamiliar names and are not used at home, including corn syrup, flavorings and sweeteners (know how to identify below 🇧🇷

Processed meats such as ham, sausage, sausage, bacon, salami, mortadella, turkey breast and turkey blanquet can increase the chance of developing cancer, according to Inca. Preservatives can lead to bowel cancer (also called colon and rectum).

Excess consumption of red meat, even if it is not ultra-processed, also increases the risk of the disease.
