Last Saturday (18), the National Front for Rural and Urban Struggle (FNL) began occupying properties in more than ten cities in São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná.
Called “Red Carnival”, the action claims “land, work, housing and education, through the occupation of lands that have already been recognized as public by the Justice, but still remain abandoned without fulfilling their social use”, says a note from the FNL.
According to the FNL, based on data from the Zero Eviction Campaign, there are more than 1 million people threatened with collective evictions. They also justify that the government of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) cut 93% of the budget for the Casa Verde e Amarela Program.
The entity calls for the mass suspension, sale and privatization of the Union’s public assets, with idle properties being used for housing and social structure purposes. And also the resumption of the works of the Minha Casa, Minha Vida program.
In rural areas, the group uses a decision by Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), that before any repossession of ownership, the Union must take responsibility for the fate of families and shoulder the relocation process. And they also request land regularization in the Special Social Interest Zone (Zeis).
The São Paulo Military Police explained that the occupations took place in the cities of Rosana, Presidente Venceslau and Marabá Paulista, in the interior of the state.
The corporation declared that at the São Francisco farm, in Rosana, the Institution did not need to act, since the owners had already withdrawn people from the FNL. Three vehicles were hit by gunfire, with no injuries recorded, according to the PMSP.
“The group blocked the highway, requiring the PM to negotiate so that the road was cleared, without confrontation. Several tires were seized that would possibly be used for a new interdiction,” said the PM from São Paulo.
In Presidente Venceslau, firearms and ammunition belonging to the tenant of the property were seized. The FNL remains in place.
In Marabá Paulista, the FNL is also occupying. A warrant was issued by the court to vacate the Floresta farm.
“Policing was reinforced in the region through area policing, Tactical Force and BAEP and invasions are being monitored. The Military Police reinforces its commitment to legality and strict compliance with the law”, they conclude.
The Association of Soy and Corn Producers of the State of São Paulo (Aprosoja-SP) published a note in which it “strongly condemns the relativization of property rights, the destruction of property”.
“We call on the constituted authorities; State Government and Federal Government to act in a firm and forceful way to demobilize the invasions and criminalize the leaders and others involved in these acts that attack the Democratic State of Law”, he continued.
