A National Security Force agent was shot in the head on Monday night (22) in the Vigário Geral region, in the north of Rio de Janeiro.
The victim and his colleague were in an official vehicle that had entered the community by mistake.
He was rescued by teams from the Special Operations Unit (NOE-RJ) of the Federal Highway Police (PRF) and taken to Getúlio Vargas Hospital, in Penha.
The request for support came from the National Force team to the PRF. The statement said that the team was being attacked by gunfire in the community. Another police officer was also injured by flying glass.
The Rio Civil Police reported that the case was reported to the 38th DP (Brás de Pina) and that efforts are underway to clarify the circumstances of the events.
The Ministry of Justice, responsible for the National Force, informed the CNN that the police officer is fine and that the shot to the head was a graze.
The National Force has been operating in Rio de Janeiro since October 16th of last year, with the aim of containing the public security crisis. The teams’ stay has already been extended several times.
On June 5, at the request of Governor Cláudio Castro (PL), the presence of agents was extended for another 90 days by the Ministry of Justice.
Around 300 members of the National Force and 250 from the Federal Highway Police (PRF) were deployed to reinforce policing in Rio de Janeiro.
The authorization was announced as part of a set of measures called the National Program to Combat Criminal Organizations (Enfoc).
