Vaccines were discovered more than 200 years ago, after scientists discovered that the body is capable of generating antibodies when receiving samples of pathogens such as viruses, bacteria and fungi. Since then, vaccines have evolved throughout the year, gaining more effective technologies and contributing to the eradication of diseases, such as smallpox — the last record of the disease is in 1977.

THE National Vaccination Calendarwhich includes 20 vaccines that protect people throughout all life cycles, from birth. Among the diseases that can be prevented by these vaccines are polio, measles, rubella, tetanus, whooping cough and other serious diseases that can often be fatal.
According to Google Trends, the main search related to the topic is “vaccination campaign 2024”, followed by “flu vaccination 2024” and “polio vaccination 2024”, which are part of the National Vaccination Calendar. See below:
In 2024, the flu vaccination campaign was carried out in the first half of the year in the Northeast, Central-West, Southeast and South regions, while in the North it takes place in the second half. This strategy aims to meet the climatic particularities of each region.
The flu vaccine administered in the SUS (Unified Health System) during the vaccination campaign is the trivalent . It protects against three different strains of the virus, responsible for most cases today: Influenza A (H1N1), Influenza A (H3N2) and Influenza B.
On the private network, it is possible to find the quadrivalent version of the immunizer that is, it protects against four strains: in addition to the three mentioned above, it also protects against another strain of Influenza B. Find out more about the flu vaccine.
In the case of polio, the national vaccination campaign took place between May 27th and June 14th across the country. The vaccine is also available on the private network. Vaccination against polio aims to contain the risk of reintroduction of the disease into Brazilian territory.
There are two types of polio vaccine: VOP (Oral Polio Vaccine), which contains the weakened virus and is administered in droplets, and the VIP (Inactivated Polio Vaccine), which contains the inactivated (killed) virus and is administered intramuscularly.
In July last year, the Ministry of Health announced that it will gradually replace VOP with VIP from 2024. The decision was taken after discussion and approval by the CTAI (Technical Immunization Advisory Chamber), which considered recent scientific evidence to protection against disease.
