NATO announces new cyber defence centre

NATO members agreed on Wednesday (10) to establish a new cyber defense unit aimed at alerting military commanders to emerging hacking threats against the alliance.

The Integrated Cyber Defense Center will share information on potential cyber threats to private infrastructure that is “necessary to support military activities,” the alliance said in a statement. The center will be based at NATO’s military headquarters in Belgium.

NATO computer networks are regularly targeted by espionage and criminal hackers. Earlier in the summit this week, pro-Russian hackers claimed to have targeted NATO websites.

“In recent days, our cybersecurity experts have detected a substantial increase in attempted hacking and leaking activities claimed by various groups on the dark web,” a NATO official told CNN . “Similar events occurred during last year’s summit, so this is not a surprise. NATO’s classified networks remained operational throughout.”
