The NATO headquarters in Izmir backed off, as, then the strict pace of Athensremoved the post congratulating Turkey on “Victory Day”.
Posting on social media, the Allied Land Command of NATO (LANDCMD), permanently based in Izmir, provocatively commented: “Happy Victory Day. Today marks the centenary of Turkey’s independence. We stand with our Turkish allies across NATO and beyond that, to celebrate their Victory and Turkish Armed Forces Day”.
At the same time, a State Department official spoke anonymously to Anadolu Agency, calling on the leaderships of Turkey and Greece to refrain from actions and statements that can increase tension between them and to work together to maintain peace and security in the wider region:
“We continue to call on our NATO allies, Greece and Turkey, to work together to maintain peace and security in the region and to resolve their differences through diplomatic means. We call on all parties to refrain from rhetoric and actions that would further increase tensions,” the Turkish state news agency quoted the unnamed US official as saying.
