Russian aircraft were intercepted by North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) countries in the Baltic Sea, Barents and the North Sea, according to a statement from the organization on Friday (4).
US F-15E fighter jets intercepted Russian aircraft operating near NATO-allied space in the Baltic Sea on Thursday. The F-15s were sent by the Uedem Combined Air Operations Center (CAOCUE) at Amari air base in Estonia to investigate the unknown aircraft transiting the airspace near the Baltic States.
According to a statement from the Allied Air Command Public Affairs Office, the Americans identified two Russian Su-25 and two MiG-31 fighter jets, which had not presented a flight plan and were not communicating with Air Traffic Control. During the interception, a Russian TU-154 transport plane was also identified.
“In no time did the Russian aircraft enter Allied airspace and all interactions were safe and professional,” NATO said.
In addition, the Norwegian air force intercepted a Russian refueling plane alongside bombers during an air-to-air refueling. The British Royal Air Force also identified aircraft from Russia that were flying towards the British Isles.
The organization said air policing operations “respond to military and civilian aircraft that do not follow international flight regulations and approach Allied airspace. These responses aim to safeguard NATO airspace and support the safety of all air users.”
