The French National Assembly, the lower house of France’s parliament, on Tuesday approved the protocols for the admission of Sweden and Finland to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, after the historic decision by the governments of the two Nordic countries to abandon their neutrality due to the military invasion of of Russia in Ukraine on February 24.
Members of the French national delegation approved joining NATO by 209 votes to 46, with the support of the Republicans (LR, right), the Socialist Party (PS, center left), the environmentalists and the presidential faction, while the National Alarm (RN, far right) abstained and France Insubordinate (LFI, radical left) voted against.
The US Senate, the upper house of the federal Congress, will hold votes today to approve the admission protocols.
The leader of the Democratic caucus in this body of the US Congress, Chuck Schumer, clarified that the debate on the accession of the two new members to NATO will begin at 13:30 (local time; 20:30 Greek time).
