A military alliance, including NATO, will not work without the United States, Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Monday during a press conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Stmerer in Brussels.
“An NATO, or whatever the name of the organization, without the US, for many reasons, will not work,” Rutte said to reporters, without giving further details.
The secretary also stressed that it is necessary to support Ukraine against Russia because of the geopolitical situation, with countries such as Iran, China and North Korea allying with the Russians.
The British premie said, in turn, that his country is not choosing between the United States or the European Union (EU), emphasizing that it is important to work with both partners in areas such as commerce and security.
“We face a more volatile world now than we face for many decades. So now it’s time to intensify on all fronts with both the US and the EU. It’s not time to back down on any of the fronts, ”said Stmerer.
European leaders held an informal meeting in the Belgian capital this Monday after global financial markets fall due to tariffs imposed on Canada, Mexico and China by US President Donald Trump.
