NATO in talks to build a naval base in Albania

Albania is in talks with NATO to build a naval base in Porto Romano, a port under construction on the Adriatic coast, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Friday, according to Reuters.

Rama told a press conference that Porto Romano, located near the coastal city of Durres and intended to be the country’s largest port, will have a commercial section as well as a military naval base.

The military base will be built and co-financed by NATO and Albania, he added.

“We will soon return to Brussels to continue discussions on our proposal to establish a NATO naval base in the new port,” Rama noted.

In May, Rama said his government was also offering NATO the Pasalimani naval base, about 200 kilometers south of Tirana. “Pasalimani” was created by Moscow as a submarine base in the 1950s to house 12 submarines. NATO is already rebuilding the Kucova air base, about 80 kilometers south of Tirana, which will be used by the alliance. It is noted that Albania became a member of NATO in 2009.
