NATO: Macron-Erdogan conference at 11:30

French President Emmanuel Macron will discuss today with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan the threat of the latter to veto the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO, in the midst of the crisis caused by the war in Ukraine.

The conversation will take place at 11:30 (Paris time; at 12:30 Greek time), according to the French presidency, which clarified that Mr. Macron will be in the fortress of Breganson, one of the residences of the French heads of state in C Αte d’Azur, where he will stay for a few days, as today is a holiday in France.

Ankara said on Wednesday it would not agree to Sweden and Finland joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization unless it first sees “concrete measures” to allay its security concerns, after welcoming two Nordic countries.

Turkey poses a problem to NATO by threatening to oppose its expansion, following requests from the two countries to join the Atlantic Alliance triggered by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Their demands are supported by the vast majority of member states of the military alliance.

Finland specifically shares a 1,300-kilometer land border with Russia.

The Turkish government has accused the two Scandinavian countries, particularly Sweden, which hosts a large community of Turkish exiles, of offering refuge to separatist Kurdish rebels of the PKK, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which it considers a terrorist organization, and to followers of the cleric accuses him of orchestrating the failed military coup of July 2016.

He called on Helsinki and Stockholm to take immediate “concrete measures” against the “organizational, financial and media presence of terrorist organizations”, according to a spokesman for the Turkish presidency and a close ally of President Erdogan.
