NATO members keep Ukraine on hold until Trump’s inauguration

Latvia’s foreign minister announced that some NATO members are waiting for Trump’s inauguration to decide their stance on Ukraine. “Theoretically, we, as political leaders, have decided that Ukraine will become a member,” Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braze told Reuters on the sidelines of the summit. The minister explained that the alliance will have to agree on when and under what conditions this will be done. “All the allies right now, they’re all waiting for the new American administration to start work,” he added. Braze, a former senior NATO official, argued that Ukraine’s hardened military would be an advantage for NATO and that her country would favor Ukraine’s invitation if the issue were on the table. “Some countries do not feel comfortable inviting a belligerent country into NATO.
