NATO military exercise marks return to the Cold War scenario, says Russia

The military exercise, called Steadfast Defender 2024, by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) marks an “irrevocable return” of the alliance to Cold War schemes, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko told the news agency. RIA state news this Sunday (21).

The organization announced last Thursday (18) that it was launching its largest exercise since the Cold War, involving around 90,000 soldiers.

“These exercises are another element of the hybrid war unleashed by the West against Russia,” Grushko told RIA.

“An exercise of this scale marks NATO’s final and irrevocable return to Cold War blueprints, when the military planning process, resources and infrastructure are being prepared for confrontation with Russia.”

NATO did not mention Russia by name in its announcement. But the main strategic document identifies the country as the most significant and direct threat to the security of the organization's members.

In February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in what Kiev and its Western allies assessed as an unprovoked imperialist land grab.

Since then, Moscow and its top diplomat, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, have frequently accused “the collective West” of waging a “hybrid war” against Russia, supporting Ukraine through financial and military aid.
