Russia will take a more direct approach to its efforts to seize Ukrainian cities, as plans to encircle targets such as Kyiv have not borne fruit, according to a NATO military official.
“We see a change in strategy on the Russian side. They are less focused on encircling cities, and they are more focused on trying to get in,” the official told CNN on condition of anonymity.
“Heavy bombardment is a sign of this change,” the official said.
Russia’s slow advance and heavy losses in the first days of the invasion have caused that change, the official said, with Russian forces now struggling with logistical problems as they try to advance further into Ukraine.
“They are short of food, fuel and spare parts,” he added.
