NATO Secretary General calls for peace in Ukraine, but insists he will not send troops to the country

The Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Jens Stoltenberg, again called for peace in Ukraine, but reaffirmed that he will not send troops to the Eastern European country. The speech took place at a press conference after a meeting with the defense ministers of member countries this Wednesday (16).

“Today, ministers agreed that we must continue to provide significant support to Ukraine, including military, financial and humanitarian aid,” he said, adding that “Putin needs to stop this war, now. Withdraw your troops and resume diplomacy in good faith.”

At another point in the press conference, however, he stated that “on the ground, we don’t see any sign” that the country was being “genuine” in the peace talks.

In a speech before the meeting, the secretary thanked the support of the allied countries and condemned again what he called a “meaningless war”.

Asked at the press conference if any member states supported the creation of a no-fly zone on Ukrainian territory, something that President Volodymyr Zelensky has called several times, he said that the allies were united on how to help Ukraine, including not sending troops so much on the ground. how much for air.

The secretary added that the situation and human suffering could worsen significantly if NATO takes action in this regard.

On Ukraine’s joining the organization, he said that the message “is the same as it was years ago: it is a sovereign nation and can choose its destiny. We respect the decision of the democratically elected government. It is up to Ukraine to decide on the application to NATO”.

The secretary added that he was concerned that Russia would use chemical weapons in Ukraine in a “false flag” operation (an attack followed by misinformation about the perpetrators). He further declared that China “should unite with the world and condemn Russia”.

Next week, a NATO summit meeting will be held at the organization’s headquarters in Brussels to talk about the conflict in Ukraine. US President Joe Biden will be present.

This Thursday (17), Stoltenberg will travel to Berlin, Germany, where he will meet with Chancellor Olaf Scholz and other members of the German government.
