Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg’s visit to Kiev on Thursday (20).
According to Peskov, NATO’s “aggressive” behavior justifies the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and qualified Vladimir Putin’s decision to attack the neighboring country as correct.
“NATO continues to demonstrate its aggressive nature that we have been talking about, even before the start of the special military operation. Of course, NATO is pursuing its line of drawing Ukraine into the Alliance. All these facts demonstrate to anyone that the president’s decision [Vladimir Putin] to launch this military operation was the right decision. We are dealing with an aggressive bloc that considers our country as its enemy”.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was in Kiev on Thursday and stated that “Ukraine’s future lies in NATO”.
Stoltenberg said he had discussed a “multi-year support initiative” with President Volodymyr Zelensky, adding that it would help Ukraine transition from Soviet-era equipment and doctrines to “NATO standards” which would “ensure full interoperability with the alliance” .
The visit and statements about Ukraine’s accession to NATO were met with resistance in Russia. The Kremlin has reiterated that preventing Kiev from joining NATO is one of its main goals.
“Such statements are short-sighted and downright dangerous. This could lead to the final collapse of the European security system,” said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
