NATO to approve deployment of troops to four countries, US ambassador to council says

NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) leaders will approve sending additional troops to Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Slovakia at tomorrow’s summit, US Ambassador to NATO Julie Smith said on Wednesday. (23).

She said they are “not just national forces”, saying additional details will be shared on Thursday.

Speaking at an Atlantic Council event, Smith said that NATO is in discussions about its medium- and long-term force presence on its eastern flank.

“We will have to do a series of ongoing assessments of our force posture that will take us weeks and months into the future,” she said, noting that “it is still an open question” of how the alliance leads to NATO-Russia — which allies NATO leaders believe Russia is “in clear violation” – and shift to their long-term stance.

“All options are on the table,” including the permanent foundation, she said.

Smith said Poland’s proposal for a NATO peacekeeping mission to Ukraine is not “dead in the water” but said there are “many open questions” and “allies want to know more about what Poland is suggesting here.” .

“We want to encourage that kind of fresh thinking,” she said. “No one ever shies away or backs away when an ally brings an idea to our discussions here.”
