NATO says up to 40,000 Russian soldiers have been killed, wounded, captured or missing in Ukraine, a senior Allied military official has said, according to The Wall Street Journal.
NATO is calculating that number based on information provided by the Ukrainian authorities and information received from Russia, both official and unofficial, the official said.
NATO estimates that between 7,000 and 15,000 Russian soldiers have been killed since the invasion began on February 24. Using statistical averages from previous conflicts that for each loss about three soldiers are injured, NATO analysts come up with their total number.
Russia began its invasion of Ukraine with about 190,000 troops. Since then, the report says, it has brought in additional troops from Chechnya, Syria and other areas.
