Natural gas: Germany will need to cut consumption more than any other EU country

THE Germany will need to reduce gas consumption more than any other member state of the European Union to achieve the 15% savings target of the quantity that was purchased until now, reports the German Agency based on data from the European Commission.

Berlin, as reported by APE-MPE, it will have to find some way to save 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas from the beginning of this month until March 2023 to reach the Brussels target. It’s about an amount equal to the annual average consumption of 5 million households of four.

Due to its high gas consumption, Europe’s largest economy is required to save more than any other EU country, as it should save almost a quarter of the total that should be stored in the Old Continent.

THE German Minister of EconomyRobert Habeck, has assured that Germany is already on track to cut consumption by 14 to 15% compared to 2021. But last week Habeck said Berlin was seeking to cut consumption by a percentage from the minimum limit (15%) agreed upon.

THE president of the Confederation of German Industries (BDI), Siegfried Rushburm, called on the government to speed up austerity measures and warned that companies trying to switch from gas to oil face obstacles and delays due to red tape.

According to Rushburm, measures such as replacement of power plants which are gas-fired with coal-burning plants.

“This is not the speed Germany needs in crisis management,” said the head of the BDI. “Germany is in the midst of the biggest energy crisis since the founding of the Federal Republic. Businesses and consumers must do their part to conserve gas to prevent production disruptions. It’s a matter of determination and speed,” argued Mr Rushburm.
