Nature Photographer of the Year 2021: wonderful photos of the environment and animals

The first prize went to a orangutan of Borneo on a tree. It is not a trivial image that won the Nature TTL Photographer of the Year 2021. In fact, what you see is not the sky, but the blue that appears in the photo is that of the water under the tree. It is an upside-down image, a symbol of the search for a new perspective, but also a sign of a world that, in the year of the pandemic, showed itself as we had never seen it before.

Over 8000 photographs arrived this year at the competition that welcomes photographers of all ages.

See the finalist photos (some are in the gallery above, others on the official website) really makes you go around the world: from London to Australia, from the Philippines to the Maldives, passing through the splendid night skies and the northern lights of Northern Europe.

The winner is the Canadian photographer Thomas Vijayan. “His image is truly unique and immediately impressed the jury,” said Will Nicholls, founder of Nature TTL. “It’s one of those images you can’t help but dwell on. The unique perspective and composition lead you to try to understand what you are really looking at ».

The image means a lot to its author. “The orangutan population is shrinking at an alarming rate. Deforestation and humans are the cause of this. Trees over 1000 years old are cut down to plant palm trees for oil. As humans we have many alternatives to palm oil, but the orangutans have no other options and lose their home. This image is a vehicle for this message ».

The 13 year old Brit Thomas Easterbrook won the under 16 award with the image of a peregrine falcon in front of a flock of starlings. The 8 categories of the competition all celebrate nature and the environment in different ways: animal behavior, camera traps, landscapes, the world under the microscope, the night sky, underwater, wild portraits and animals in the city.
