Alexei Navalny's mother, Lyudmila, accused Russian investigators this Thursday (22) of planning a “secret” funeral for her son and said she would not agree to it.
“They want this to be done secretly, without goodbye. They want to take me to the edge of a cemetery, to a fresh grave and say: here is your son. I don’t agree with that,” she said in a YouTube video.
“They are blackmailing me, setting the conditions of where, when and how Alexey should be buried,” Lyudmila added.
There was no immediate response from Russian investigators.
She said they had shown her the body and the death certificate. Navalny's team said the death certificate stated the opposition politician died of natural causes.
Navalny's mother and his lawyer traveled to Salekhard on Saturday, where prison authorities said the opposition leader's body would be examined – but when they arrived at the morgue they were told the body was not there, Navalny's team said.
Navalny, 47, Russia's best-known opposition politician, died suddenly in an Arctic penal colony last week. His staff and family alleged that the Kremlin murdered him, a claim the Kremlin angrily rejected.
