Navy carries out almost 5 thousand procedures in operation “GLO do Mar”

Approaches, seizures and inspection of vessels. In the first week of operations in the ports of São Paulo and Rio Janeiro, the Brazilian Navy carried out almost 5 thousand procedures within the scope of the Law and Order Guarantee operation, launched by the Presidency of the Republic.

The “GLO do Mar”, as it has been called, has as its main objectives the fight against drug trafficking, weapons and other crimes. The actions carried out by the military occur in conjunction with Public Security agencies and bodies.

During the first seven days, the operation carried out 505 vessel approaches. Of this total, 6 were seized for administrative irregularities. 4,368 vehicle inspections were also carried out; 61 interagency actions and 11 inspections of ship hulls.

In total, 1,900 military personnel operate in Guanabara Bay (RJ), Sepetiba Bay (RJ), the Port of Rio de Janeiro and the Port of Santos (SP). The operation reinforces patrolling and naval inspection in maritime areas, without impacting the regular functioning of the locations.

For the Operation Task Force Commander, Vice Admiral Renato Rangel Ferreira, the initial damage to trafficking is caused by the suppression of the activity, due to intelligence work and cooperation between all bodies involved.

“The operation was not a surprise for society or criminals. Thus, medium and long-term work is being developed to ensure that trafficking does not use these strategic routes, which are being reinforced by the Armed Forces, while intelligence work analyzes and monitors illicit activities and changes in the pattern of route of drugs and weapons, thus causing the logistical suffocation of trafficking”, he explains.

The work has worked as follows: Navy Marine troops occupy the main access gates to the ports. With this, the military reinforces the inspection of people, vehicles and objects with the use of scent dogs, X-ray equipment and high-tech detection instruments.

Police power

Law and Order Guarantee operations grant military personnel from the Armed Forces, on a provisional basis, the possibility of acting with police powers.
This occurs until normality is reestablished, episodically, in a restricted area and for a limited time, with the aim of, together with public security bodies, preserving public order and the integrity of the population, in addition to ensuring the regular functioning of institutions. .

In addition to the Navy, the Brazilian Air Force is also involved in the Law and Order Guarantee operation. However, to date, it has not released a report on its activities.
