Two weeks after the start of flooding that left 154 people dead in Rio Grande do Sul, Navy personnel continue rescuing people and animals. This Thursday (16), a 59-year-old woman was rescued on Ilha dos Marinheiros, in the Lagoa dos Patos region.
Manicurist Nilsa Bilhalva Mendes was sheltering at a friend's house, as her home was completely flooded.
For health reasons, diabetes and heart problems, after the flight, she was taken by Civil Defense to the home of one of her three children in the city of Rio Grande.
The intense rains that hit the region caused rivers to overflow and the formation of flooded areas, leaving several communities without access to basic services, food and housing.
Around two thousand people have already been rescued by the Navy. In total, 11 aircraft, nine ships, 50 vessels and 70 vehicles have been mobilized to provide assistance.
Furthermore, since May 9th, the Navy Expeditionary Medical Unit (UMEM) has been carrying out health assistance actions in a field hospital, set up in the municipality of Guaíba.
