Navy issues warning for risk of subtropical cyclone in southern Brazil

THE Brazilian Navy issued an alert this Friday (13) for the possible formation of a subtropical cyclone in the South Atlantic Ocean, close to the Rio Grande do Sul and Uruguay.

The warning is valid until Tuesday (17) and uses atmospheric simulation models from the United States and the European Community, which indicate atmospheric pressure below 1000hPa, with a risk of strong winds and unstable weather.

Even without confirmation of the cyclone, the drop in atmospheric pressure could cause heavy rain and rough seas on the south coast of Brazil during the weekend.

THE Climate also warned of the risk of a hangover, with waves of up to 2.5 meters between Torres (RS) and Florianópolis (SC) until Sunday (15) night, due to the intensification of winds.

What is a subtropical cyclone

A subtropical cyclone is an isolated low atmospheric pressure system, unconnected to cold fronts. In the Southern Hemisphere, air circulates clockwise around the center of low pressure.

In these systems, the center close to the surface is hotter than the surroundings, creating atmospheric instability and increasing the chance of storms.

The Navy names the subtropical cyclones formed on the Brazilian coast. The next person to be nominated, if he graduates, will be Biguá, which means “sea bird” in Tupi. In 2024, the only recorded subtropical cyclone was Akará, in February. Above-average temperatures in the South Atlantic in recent months have contributed to the formation of these systems.
