This Friday, the 3rd, the Navy resumed the search and rescue task force for victims of the collapse of the Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira Bridge, on BR-226, between Estreito, in Maranhão, and Aguiarnópolis, in Tocantins. The 13th body was found this Friday (03).
The operation with diving and the use of underwater drones was interrupted on Thursday, 2nd, due to the need to open the floodgates of the hydroelectric plant operated by Consórcio Estreito Energia (Ceste). Searches with vessels and aerial drones continue uninterruptedly, says the Navy.
At 10:30 am this Friday, a body was located and recovered by the task force. Divers carried out raids near the bridge wreckage and brought the body to the surface. In addition to the victims found in recent days, 13 deaths have been confirmed, among 17 missing.
The Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira Bridge, located over the Tocantins River, connected the States of Maranhão and Tocantins until December 22, 2024, when it collapsed in the late afternoon.
Ferry
The Navy says that it was consulted, on December 30, 2024, by the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT), about the possibility and availability of operating a ported ferry, on an emergency basis, to cross the Tocantins River from passenger and emergency cars.
The Force says it will give “full priority to this matter”, but warns about compliance with safety requirements such as: construction of access ramps on each bank of the Tocantins River, for safe boarding and disembarking of vehicles; construction of fixed mooring points on land; preparation of an adequate and suitable place for the transport of vehicle drivers and passengers, as they will not be able to cross in their cars, for safety reasons; and the raft must be equipped with compatible salvage material.
“To date, the Maritime Authority has not received the necessary documents proving compliance with the obligations described above.”
