The Navy said this Saturday (8) that it will open an inquiry to investigate the causes and circumstances of the rock collapse in the city of Capitólio, in Minas Gerais, which left at least five people dead and 32 injured. There are still about 20 missing.
“The Brazilian Navy informs that it became aware of an accident, late this morning, after a rock slide hit boats navigating the canyon region, in Capitólio-MG,” the Navy’s advisors said in a statement.
The statement adds that the Furnas River Police immediately deployed Search and Rescue teams to the site to provide the necessary support to the crews involved in the accident, in the transport of injured people to Santa Casa de Capitólio and in the assistance of other agencies that work at the site .
A video circulating on social networks, whose veracity was confirmed by firefighters, shows a large block of stones collapsing into the water, where it is possible to see three boats, two of which were close to the collapse.
AT CNN, Lieutenant Pedro Aihara, spokesman for the MG Fire Department, stated that there were around seventy people doing tourism in the region.
