ND MPs on surveillance: The investigation should not be limited to the Androulaki case

To look for the problems and any pathologies of the EYP over time so that we can formulate proposals for improvement, for this reason we should not limit ourselves only to the Androulakis case, the common request of the ND MPs during the debate in the Plenary of the PASOK proposal -KINAL for the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry.

ND Member of Parliament Anna Mani Papadimitriou stated that “this investigation cannot and should not be limited to today. Not because the government seeks any compensation. But because it is important that a useful result emerges from the work of the commission of inquiry, a substantial benefit to the country”. That is why “the problems and any pathologies of the intelligence service should be looked for over time and proposals should be formulated both to improve the operation of the most critical service of the state for national security, terrorism and the detection of serious criminal offences, as well as the regulatory framework of legal connections, especially when they concern political persons”. In our democracy, the MP stressed, “there is no room for any shade, for any issue, and for this reason we must correct any pathologies of today and yesterday. This is what the challenges facing our country require, this is what we owe to the Greek citizens . Let’s all contribute to this effort together”.

ND MP Efstathios Konstantinidis said that “a case with classified information requires a demonstration of the utmost seriousness and responsibility from all of us. Unfortunately, once again, we do not see the opposition possessing a cool approach that is appropriate to the circumstances “. He accused PASOK-KINAL of not looking for answers to the case of Nikos Androulakis, but like SYRIZA thinks it has found a “source for political benefits” and is copying him. The ND, he said, “does not want us to control the joints of power. We do not feel the need to finish off our political opponents. We do not fabricate incriminating evidence. That is why we come with a true disposition to investigate the causes and look for institutional loopholes but also with proposals for improving the operation of the National Service”.

ND MP Maria-Alexandra Kefala emphasized that “it is clear the government’s intention to investigate the Androulakis case in depth, institutionally, so that not a single shadow remains”. He emphasized that “the EYP’s contribution to the security of the country was in the past, and continues to be, very important” as it is “a valuable operational arm of the state”. We stay, the MP said, “away from easy narratives, opposition crowns and imaginative espionage scenarios and it would be a mistake to weaken our secret services”. He stated that “we are open to discussing changes that will protect the service and at the same time strengthen the transparency of its action. To regulate any operational failures, but we will not allow the EYP to turn into reality television”.

ND MP Makarios Lazaridis emphasized that “today in Parliament we seek to shield credibility. To strengthen accountability. To strengthen the institutional function. And finally, to further shield our already strong Democracy”. He called on the opposition MPs to contribute productively and creatively support the process of strengthening the Republic, through the framework already set by the Prime Minister, in order to reveal the truth and cover the regulatory gaps in the EYP. He pointed out that “the investment in polarization , populism, leveling, nihilism and toxicity” are paths that are “morally wrong”, “politically irresponsible and nationally dangerous”. He wondered if the 54,000 connections on SYRIZA “were good attendances” saying that “Mr. Tsipras I imagine that not knows who it is, unless he knows and doesn’t tell us!”, and pointed out that “Kyriakos Mitsotakis himself and members of his family have been the target of surveillance”. of the monitoring framework and finding democratic safeguards and we should not miss another opportunity to fight we are perennial pathogens”.

ND Member of Parliament Charalambos Papadimitriou pointed out that “today’s debate is the Parliament’s appropriate response to a demonized tactic designed by the official opposition based on half-truths and real lies. It is the democratic and institutional response to the wicked and destructive actions of the great upheaval that Mr. Tsipras and the small circle of Koumoundourou are dreaming”. The ND MP emphasized that “the Hellenic Republic has several checks and balances, and the formation of the commission of inquiry, as well as its work, prove it” as well as that the “immediate reaction of the prime minister, by replacing the person in charge of the EYP, the honest and courageous recognition of any responsibilities, the strengthening of the control of the Service by the independent Judiciary and the Parliament are the first – because there will be others – democratic answers”. He observed that “those who would like to cancel the work of the irreplaceable state intelligence apparatus, to destabilize the country in the midst of the great crisis that we have ahead of us this winter, can hardly hide behind screams, whispers and lies.” Citizens, he said, “recognize the critical role of the National Intelligence Service. They want a strengthened, modern and efficient National Intelligence Service that is under direct and continuous control in terms of compliance with laws and respect for individual liberties.”
