Nearly 11,000 Ukrainians entered Romania on the first day of the Russian offensive alone

A total of 10,624 Ukrainians entered Romania through its six border checkpoints on Thursday as Russia invaded Ukraine by land, sea and air, Romanian Interior Minister Lucian Bode said on Friday.

Bode said 3,660 of them passed through Romania en route to Bulgaria and Hungary. Of the approximately 7,000 currently in Romania, only 11 have applied for political asylum. The rest can stay legally for up to 90 days.

A spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said in Geneva that at least 100,000 people had been displaced in Ukraine after fleeing their homes, and several thousand had already fled to neighboring countries such as Moldova, Romania and Poland.
