A mass grave with almost 300 bodies was discovered at Nasser hospital in southern Gaza by Gaza Civil Defense workers following the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the area on April 7.
“We have recovered 283 bodies from the mass grave in the courtyard of the Nasser Medical Complex since the withdrawal of the Israeli army,” Colonel Yamen Abu Suleiman, director of Civil Defense in Khan Younis, told CNN this Monday (22).
The city of Khan Younis was left in ruins after months of Israeli offensive.
Suleiman said some of the bodies were found with their hands and feet tied.
“There were signs of executions in the camp. We don't know if they were buried alive or executed. Most of the bodies are decomposed,” he said.
A CNN cannot verify Suleiman's claims and cannot confirm the causes of death among the unearthed bodies. A CNN asked the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) a series of questions about the discovery of the mass grave.
A man present at the scene told the CNN who has not yet found the body of her 21-year-old son, who died in January.
“I haven't found him yet. We buried him there. But we can't find it. And we wanted to make him a decent tomb.”
