Russian authorities have detained a total of 5,942 people for taking part in anti-war protests across the country since the Kremlin ordered the invasion of Ukraine, independent monitoring website OVD-Info said on Sunday.
According to the latest figures, 2,802 people were detained for participating in unauthorized demonstrations in 57 cities across the country on Sunday, OVD-Info also reported.
In Moscow alone, 1,275 people were arrested.
So far, there have been no signs of protests on Monday (28).
Under Russian law, large demonstrations require protesters to apply for a permit, which must be presented no later than 15 but not less than 10 days before the event.
Heavy fines – and in some cases even imprisonment – can be imposed on anyone who protests without permission.
Individuals are allowed to hold individual protests, but it’s not unheard of for people to be detained over it either.
On Thursday, Russia’s Investigative Committee warned that participation in any anti-war protest was illegal. He also said offenses could be entered into participants’ criminal records that “would leave a mark on the person’s future.”
