Neca Setubal: Back to school is a time to reflect on our roots and heritage

THE CNN Specialist Neca Setubal talks about going back to school and recalls Paulo Freire when he says that “school is a place for learning, but also a space for coexistence with the different”.

She highlights how the school environment is also composed of the social, economic and cultural context of the community and the students.

Setubal cited the death of young Congolese Moïse Kabagambe, murdered in Rio de Janeiro after collecting his salary. And he emphasized the importance of Law nº 11.645, which establishes mandatory teaching of Afro-Brazilian and indigenous history and culture in schools.

According to the specialist, “back to school is a time for reflection, to bring the discussion of our roots and inheritances in education to the center”.

She also highlights that private social investment has followed these issues and supported institutes, research, and teacher training for the racial debate.
