Need for socio-environmental education in schools is urgent, says teacher

The state school Leoncio Correia, in Curitiba, has been developing a socio-environmental education project since 2020, under the command of environmental educator Gabriel Sorrentino.

In an interview with CNN Radio , he argues that “there are laws and decrees that exist, but are not implemented” in schools. “Here in Paraná, the State Environmental Education Program was approved, and I believe that we can believe that we can take another step towards building sustainable schools and societies.”

Even so, the professor believes that “more investment or political will is needed”: “We need efficient public policies for this issue to be addressed.”

In Sorrentino’s assessment, working with students is what “gives the most return”: “It is more difficult to promote sustainability issues with other school actors, such as teachers and staff, than with children.”

“I hope that this generation can wake up to this. I believe it is an issue that we have to face as a society, it is urgent and we have to join efforts because the crisis is there and it affects the most vulnerable people in general.”

In Paraná, he stated that there are advances in the construction of a sustainable city, state policies and urban agriculture.

“Here at the school, there is an environmental education project that won a UN project, we received funding to walk in this, we want the school to be a center for radiating knowledge.”

Leoncio Correia school has an Instagram account @cultivandosaberes to show the environmental education project.
