Twenty-six days after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, negotiations between the two countries have not progressed towards building a ceasefire. This is the assessment of Gustavo Menezes, professor of International Relations at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP), in an interview with CNNthis Monday (21).
“These negotiations have not led to any tangible progress on the issue of political solution to the conflict,” said the professor.
Although several countries have imposed sanctions on the country ruled by Vladimir Putin, the Russian president has shown no signs that he is close to de-escalation.
“This whole issue of the economic effects by the Western powers, Russia considers that, at least in the short term, it would be a sacrifice, it is something that can be tolerated in the name of achieving these greater Russian security interests, which in this case is to maintain Ukraine outside the Western sphere of influence.”
On Thursday (24), the day that marks one month since the beginning of the war, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) holds an extraordinary summit in Brussels. US President Joe Biden has confirmed that he will go to Europe for the meeting.
“I believe that NATO should maintain this policy of not getting directly involved, in the sense of not sending troops from within their countries, collective troops, to fight on Ukrainian territory against Russia”, assessed Menezes about the expectations for the meeting.
