Singer Neguinho da Beija-Flor turned 75 years old this Saturday (29). Born in Nova Iguaçu, a city in Baixada Fluminense, he is a performer at the samba school that has been his name since 1976.
For Beija-Flor de Nilópolis, Neguinho won the Estandarte de Ouro award for Best Performer five times and was in all fourteen of the group’s titles (1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1983, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2015 and 2018). He was also the composer of five of the school’s sambas (1976, 1978, 1981, 1983 and 1984).
In addition to his absolute success in Marquês de Sapucaí, the singer also left his name engraved in the history of national music, giving voice to songs that rocked generations and are still successful today.
Do you want to know about Neguinho da Beija-Flor’s career outside of Carnival? CNN presents you with five songs sung by him. See below:
“Angela”
Neguinho da Beija-Flor’s main hit, “Ângela” was written by Serginho Meriti, who also composed “Truth” and “Let Life Take Me Away” and “When I Tell You”, and Alexandre from Rio Grande do Sul.
The lyrics exalt the black beauty of Ângela, the woman loved by the lyrical self. The title of the song is also the name of one of Neguinho’s daughters.
“The Champion (My Team)”
A hit that came from the pen of Neguinho da Beija-Flor, “O Campeão”, also known as “Domingo Vou Ao Maracanã”, became one of the main chants of fans throughout Brazil and is, to this day, used as a warm-up by the Nilópolis association before its parades.
“Woman, Woman, Woman (Fixed Idea)”
“Mulher, Mulher, Mulher” was composed by Neguinho in 1974, during the Bola Preta rehearsals, but it only exploded in 2010. It was the first song released by Neguinho after recovering from bowel cancer, behind only the samba-enredo of Beija-Flor that year.
“Divine”
It was also Alexandre who composed “Divina”, another declaration of love sung by Neguinho. The song speaks of a love so strong that it causes delirium and awakens longing in the distance.
“Globeline”
The theme for “Globeleza” was written by Jorge Aragão and José Franco Lattari, and Quinho do Salgueiro was the first to sing it, but it was Neguinho who made the song explode. To this day, it is the song that accompanies TV Globo’s Carnivals.
