The Nepal Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is investigating the involvement of a local actress and model in Facebook promotional materials about cryptocurrencies.
Police investigators questioned Priyanka Karki on suspicion of promoting digital asset transactions.
The country’s central bank has expressly banned all digital currency transactions, and the government has ordered the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) to shut down all local websites and applications related to cryptocurrency trading.
There are two versions of how the investigation began. According to one of them, the actress herself became the initiator of the proceedings, who told the media that she contacted the CBI after she was surprised to find her image in an advertisement.
“I contacted the police for help after learning that my photos were being used in promotional materials,” Karki says.
According to the CBI, it was the security forces who launched the investigation immediately after they discovered a cryptocurrency advertisement with a photo of the actress on Facebook.
“The investigation is ongoing, and we are trying to find out if the actress is involved in the promotion of crypto trading or her photograph was simply used. We will also check if she has invested in the cryptocurrency market,” said police spokesman Shyam Kumar Mahato.
The police say that the actress was released on bail, and her smartphone was seized for investigative actions.
Last week, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) filed a lawsuit against the owner of Meta (Facebook) for “posting fraudulent ads featuring prominent Australian public figures.”
