Nepal to change Everest Base Camp due to climate change

Due to climate change, the effects around the world are not long in coming and the Khumbu Glacier in Nepal is no exception. More than a thousand people arrive at this glacier located on Everest in the spring, making a camp that, according to the BBC’s director of Tourism for Nepal, Taranath Adhikari, will have to change due to global warming.

This camp is at an altitude of 5,364 meters and due to the melting of the Khumbu, it will move to an area that is between 200 and 400 meters below. Nepalese authorities have reported that cracks appear frequently in the glacier and that noises caused by falling rocks or ice are constantly heard.

The melting is due not only to global warming, but also to the presence and activities of people in this area. In records from 2018, researchers from the University of Leeds in the UK found that the Khumbu Glacier was losing 9.5 million cubic meters of water a year.

Now, with the loss of thickness, it is necessary to move the camp in order to avoid the risk of an avalanche, ice fall or rockslide. Given these events, it is very likely that the number of visitors will decrease and this will affect the local economy, since hiking and mountaineering is the most important source of income for those who live in the region. However, the move of the camp is expected until the year 2024.
