Nepali climber breaks world record and climbs Mount Everest for the 30th time

A Nepalese Sherpa guide finished climbing Mount Everest for a record 30th time on Wednesday, according to an official. This is also the second time he has completed the climb in 10 days.

Ordinary climbers take several days to climb the summit of Everest, and it is very rare for them to make multiple ascents in a short space of time.

Kami Rita, 54, reached the 8,849-meter peak via the traditional southeast summit route, said Khim Lal Gautam, a Nepalese tourism official.

Kami Rita had climbed Everest for the 29th time on May 12.

He “broke his own record, this marks his 30th ascension to the top of the world,” said Gautam, head of the expedition monitoring and facilitation field office at base camp, in an X post.

The climber first climbed Everest in 1994, and has done so almost every year since then, except when authorities closed the mountain for various reasons within three years.

Another Sherpa climber climbed Everest 27 times, the most after Kami Rita.

Mountaineering is an important tourist activity, source of income and employment in Nepal, which is home to eight of the world's 14 highest peaks.

Details of Kami Rita's climb early Wednesday were awaited, officials said.
