Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu admitted today for the first time that he gave the go-ahead for the September bomber attack against Lebanon’s Hezbollah, his spokesman Omer Dostri told AFP. Speaking at the weekly cabinet, Netanyahu said he had given the go-ahead for the operation, for which responsibility had not yet been claimed, Dostri said, confirming a report by Israeli media. Buried devices, buzzers and wireless transceivers, used by Hezbollah members, exploded on September 17 and 18 in the southern suburbs of Beirut, as well as in southern and eastern Lebanon, a stronghold of the Islamist group Hezbollah. The blasts killed 39 people and injured nearly 3,000, according to Lebanese authorities. Although this spectacular operation bore the stamp of the Mossad, Israel’s powerful foreign intelligence agency, Israel had not openly claimed responsibility for it or commented on it.
