Netanyahu compares Israeli bombing to Allied fight in WWII

Fending off criticism of the very heavy civilian casualty toll in Gaza Strip on Israeli military operations in retaliation for the October 7 attack by Hamas, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu compared this war to the Allies’ fight against Nazism in World War II.

Despite civilian casualties, no one told the Allies “don’t eliminate nazism”, Mr. Netanyahu said. A journalist had asked him whether Israel imposes collective punishment on the residents of the Gaza Strip.

Israel’s prime minister was referring to his response to an RAF bombing raid on Copenhagen that accidentally hit a school near the end of World War II on March 21, 1945, killing 125 civilians, including 86 children and 18 adults inside the educational institution.

“In 1944, the RAF bombed the Gestapo headquarters in Copenhagen — a perfectly legitimate target. But the British pilots missed and instead of the Gestapo headquarters they hit a children’s hospital a short distance away and I think 84 children were burned alive. This was not a war crime,” he said. “It was not something you could blame Britain for. It was a legal act of war, with tragic consequences”, as “such legal acts” sometimes have.

The Allies nevertheless continued the war until the end, despite the tragic consequences, because they knew that the future of civilization and of all humanity was being judged and “so, I tell you now that the future of our civilization is being judged”, added the Israeli Prime Minister.
