In an interview with WW This Thursday (12), the professor of International Relations at the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) and Harvard researcher, Vitelio Brustolin, said that the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, does not believe in the reconstitution of Syria as a State under single government.
For Brustolin, Netanyahu sees Syria in a similar way to Libya after the death of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011: a country divided by groups claiming power and in a situation of governmental impasse. This vision has guided Israeli actions in the region, according to the professor.
Brustolin said Israel has bombed 310 targets inside Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. These operations have as their main objective the elimination of chemical weapons, which the Syrian regime has used against its own population and as a threat to Israel.
“Israel is trying to eliminate not only chemical weapons, but also naval vessels, tanks, arsenals, missiles of a possible regime or a split regime that may be hostile to Israel,” explained the researcher.
Vitelio also highlights the use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime, specifically mentioning the use of Sarin gas against suburbs of Damascus, the capital of Syria. “In addition, Israel has focused on targeting deposits of chlorine gas, another internationally prohibited chemical weapon”, highlighted the professor.
Complex regional context
The situation in Syria is worsened by the presence of groups such as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), considered terrorist by the United States since 2013. Its leader, Eduardo Jullani, has had a reward of 10 million dollars for his capture since 2017.
Brustolin also mentioned the Kurdish issue, remembering that 18% of Turkey’s population is made up of Kurds, totaling around 30 million people. The significant presence of Kurds in Syria and Iraq adds yet another layer of complexity to the region’s geopolitical landscape.
