Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed that “there will be a strong reaction” to the deaths of six hostages whose bodies were found in Gaza over the weekend, an Israeli official told Reuters. CNN. Furthermore, the prime minister plans to “hurt Hamas in a way that Israel has never done before.”
The official also spoke about the Israeli cabinet’s decision on Thursday (29) to require the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to remain in the Philadelphia corridor, a 14-kilometer strip along the Gaza-Egypt border, in the initial phase of a possible hostage release and ceasefire deal.
The Philadelphia corridor is currently controlled by the Israeli military.
The continued deployment of Israeli troops throughout the area during the first phase of a ceasefire agreement has been a major point of contention between Israel and Hamas.
The armed group says Israeli troops must withdraw from the border area.
“Anyone who says we can leave (the) Philadelphia Axis for 42 days knows very well that it will be for 42 years,” the official pointed out.
“The world will not allow us to return. Everyone understands the importance of [Estreito de] Philadelphia and [o líder do Hamas Yahya] Sinwar understands better. That is why he insists,” he added.
“All arms smuggling to Gaza is through the Philadelphia corridor. If we change the cabinet decision, it will be a prize of terror, you will not bring the hostages back,” the source concluded.
