Historian Michel Gherman, coordinator of the Center for Jewish Studies at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), stated that the actions of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are indefensible, at least in the medium and long term. Gherman highlighted that the situation in Gaza is entering a new phase, marked by testimonies about events in the region.
According to the UFRJ professor, this stage of the conflict provides a new perspective and perception of what actually happened and is still happening in Gaza.
“It seems very difficult to me that in the coming weeks and months the situation will not become clear and Benjamin Netanyahu will effectively be considered by the West as a person who committed crimes against humanity,” said Gherman.
The historian also commented on the decision of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and its potential impact on the Western coalition in relation to Israel. He interpreted the specific retreat of some countries, such as France, in relation to the Court’s resolution as a tactical maneuver to ensure the advancement of a possible agreement that could appease the region.
However, Gherman highlighted that, with the passage of time and a greater awareness of what happened in Gaza, it will be difficult not to recognize the occurrence of crimes against humanity.
“There is a concrete possibility of an isolation of positions such as those of the United States and Hungary and an advancement of positions that will, for reasons of internal pressure, make the Court’s situation absolutely unavoidable”, he explained.
The continuation of the war and the humanitarian situation
Gherman argued that the war in Gaza continues for ideological rather than strategic reasons. He emphasized that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is unsustainable, which makes it even more difficult to defend Netanyahu’s actions.
The professor concluded by stating that the international perception of Israel’s actions in Gaza is changing, and that this could lead to a growing isolation of Netanyahu and his policies on the international stage.
