In May, it became known that Netflix was looking for the head of a new division that deals with video games. Now Bloomberg writes that Netflix will introduce a subscription gaming service next year.
Netflix has hired Mike Verdu, formerly at EA and Facebook / Oculus, as its VP of Game Development. This confirms that Netflix is going to create its own games and not just license others, although it will likely do both.
Mike Verdu has worked on popular mobile games for Electronic Arts, including the Sims franchise, Plants vs. Zombies and Star Wars. From 2009 to 2012, he also served as Chief Creative Officer for Zynga Inc. Netflix will be building its own gaming team in the coming months, according to someone familiar with the matter. The company has already begun posting job postings on its website for game development.
The source claims that “the idea is to offer video games on Netflix’s streaming platform over the next year,” and adds that “the company has no plans to charge additional fees for game content at this time.”
Netflix shares rose 3.3% to $ 566 in late trading after Bloomberg reported it.
