Netflix reveals first teaser for Korean version of “La Casa de Papel”

A Netflix announced this Tuesday (18) the release of the first teaser of “La Casa de Papel: Korea – Joint Economy Area”, remake of the Spanish hit, now set in the Asian country. The cast of the production has also been officially announced.

Announced in 2020, the plot promises to repeat the action of the original, focusing on elaborate robberies of national banks and keeping the same characters.

In the iconic role of the Professor, the mastermind behind the plans is Yoo Ji-tae, known as the villain in the 2003 movie “Oldboy.” Park Hae-soo, from another Netflix hit, “Round 6,” is Berlin. Kim Yunjin (from “Lost”) completes the cast, as Inspector Woojin, version of Raquel/Lisbon; Jun Jong-seo as Tokyo; Jang Yoon-ju as Nairobi; Lee Won-jong as Moscow; Kim Ji-hun as Denver; Lee Hyun-woo as Rio; Kim Ji-hoon as Helsinki; and Lee Kyu-ho as Oslo.

The new version is written by Ryoo Yong-Jae, based on the original scripts by Álex Pina. The premiere is scheduled for 2022, but still no date.

The announcement consolidates two trends in the streaming platform. The first is the bet on Korean productions. The success of “Round 6” in 2021, with Golden Globe nominations and public attention, consolidated Netflix’s investments in the country, and new series are expected, such as “All of Us are Dead”.

The second trend appears to be the consolidation of its own franchises. “The Money Heist” became one of the biggest hits in streaming when it was bought by Netflix in 2017 (the first two seasons were produced and initially shown by the Spanish channel Antena 3, in the same year).

Ending in December 2021, it ran for five seasons and was considered Netflix’s first non-English-language hit, with over 69 million views. For 2023, the platform had already announced the debut of a spin off about the character Berlin, also written by Álex Pina and bringing actor Pedro Alonso back to the role.
