Netflix’s new horror thriller series, “The Midnight Club” which premiered on October 7, set the record for the most scares scripted in a single episode, totaling 21. The record was by Guinness World Records.
A scripted scare is a pre-planned action performed with the intention of making a person jump or scream in fear.
Hours before the worldwide release on the streaming platform, the first episode premiered at New York Comic Con, where it startled an unprepared audience. During a question and answer session with the cast, a Guinness World Records representative announced the record attempt and the successful outcome.
Created by Mike Flanagan (“The Curse” and “Doctor Sleep”) and Leah Fong , “The Midnight Club” is based on the 1994 novel of the same name by Christopher Pike.
The series follows protagonist Ilonka Pawluk (Iman Benson), a high school student eagerly awaiting admission to Stanford University. However, her life takes an unfortunate turn when she is diagnosed with terminal cancer and ends up in Brightcliffe, a mysterious asylum run by an enigmatic doctor.
There, Ilonka joins a group of terminally ill teenagers who gather every day at midnight to share scary stories. One night, they make a pact: the first to die must send a signal from beyond the grave.
In the opening week, “The Midnight Club” garnered 18.7 million viewing hours, earning a spot in Netflix’s Top 10.
