Netflix Suicide Suicide in ’13 Reasons Why’ Filed

A Netflix saw an open lawsuit against her being filed by a federal judge on Tuesday (11), in a case involving the teen series “13 Reasons Why”. The lawsuit had been filed by the family of a teenager who committed suicide in 2017, alleging that the show encouraged the act.

In the sentence, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers understood that the accusation was not supported by the prerogatives of freedom of expression. “This is a tragic case. But it cannot continue as a process”, he stated in his opinion.

“13 Reasons Why” debuted on the streaming platform in 2017 and soon attracted attention (and controversy) for its premise: the plot follows the consequences of the suicide of teenager Hannah, who leaves a series of cassette tapes to a friend explaining the reasons behind of the tragic decision. The direct and raw approach garnered praise for addressing the issue, but it also generated accusations of apology as well as exploitation of the mental health of young people.

The lawsuit against Netflix was filed in August 2021 by the family of Bella Herndon, who killed herself shortly after the series premiered. The lawsuit argued that the platform released the work without adequate warnings on the topic, as well as having no control mechanism for the supply of sensitive content.

The company’s lawyers argued that the control of certain subjects and themes could border on censorship, and that it does not interfere with the themes covered in its productions. “If you sue with the argument that you want to prevent the dissemination of the content of a series, you will lose,” Judge Gonzalez Rogers agreed in the sentence issued now.

Despite such justifications, however, Netflix had already taken action on the controversy before. In 2019, the platform had already removed the scene of Hannah’s suicide from the final episode of the first season of “13 Reasons Why”.

In addition to cutting the three-minute sequence, signs and warnings were added at the beginning of episodes that contained other sensitive moments. The series, based on Jay Asher’s novel of the same name, ran for four seasons, and ended in 2020.
