Amsterdam Schiphol Airport today urged travelers not to go there for several hours, as the ground staff strike at the start of the school holiday season wreaked havoc on Europe’s third busiest airport.
“The terminal is suffocatingly full at the moment; Siphol is urging travelers not to come to the airport anymore,” airport officials said in a statement issued just before noon local time.
Almost 3 hours later, the airport announced that passengers could go there, however they would be faced with long waiting times and possible flight delays or cancellations.
The police closed the outputs of the motorway to the airport for a short time in the afternoon local time, as the queues at the departure gates were expanded outside the airport buildings.
A Schiphol spokesman said the temporary closure was necessary to ensure safety and that as many passengers as possible out of the thousands of angry passengers were able to board their flights.
The baggage handlers of KLM, the Dutch arm of Air France-KLM, have decided to join an unannounced strike earlier today in a bid to push for more working conditions.
KLM ground staff manages about 50% of the luggage arriving at Schiphol, Europe’s third busiest airport after Charles de Gaulle in Paris and Heathrow in London.
The trade union FNV reported that the work stoppage ended around noon.
